Here at Joe Anselmo Motorsports, we consider every Porsche a masterpiece, and the 1989 Porsche 911 3.2L Carrera Silver Anniversary Edition with a G50 gearbox is no exception. This rare beauty recently came into our shop on a flatbed tow truck, and we couldn’t wait to get started on diagnosing its issue and breathing new life into it. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the work we did to restore this rolling piece of art to its former glory.
A Special Arrival
The Silver Anniversary Edition is a limited and highly sought-after variant of the 911 3.2 Carrera, celebrating 25 years of Porsche’s legendary 911 lineage. This particular car, owned by one of our newer customers Ronnie Pluma, boasts incredibly low mileage, stunning silver paint, a light grey and black interior, and countless original components that make it a time capsule of Porsche engineering.
First Time in Decades: Engine & Transmission Removal
When we began the job, it became clear to us that this car had never had its engine or transmission removed. From the original VIN stickers on the bottom of the engine case and transmission to the untouched engine mount bolts and layers of original cosmoline, this clearly told the story of decades of preservation. Nick and Armando were honored to be the first to take on this task, carefully ensuring everything was handled with precision and care.
Dry Ice Cleaning Magic
Before reassembly, we enlisted the help of Joel at Below Zero Dry Ice Cleaning. Using dry ice cleaning technology, he transformed the engine and transmission, restoring them to near-showroom condition. This meticulous process not only enhances aesthetics but also preserves the integrity of original components. We also applied a generous coating of DINITROL underbody protection, a high performance rust proofing and corrosion inhibiting wax-like substance to replace the original cosmoline with a more modern alternative.
Addressing the Clutch Failure
The primary reason for the car’s visit was a failed rubber-centered clutch, a common issue for this era of 911s. We replaced it with a more durable spring-centered alternative, ensuring smooth performance and long-term reliability. During the process, we also discovered that the flywheel reference sensors had aged beyond their years, with their connectors and wire insulation crumbling at a touch. These were replaced to prevent an inevitable roadside breakdown.
Powder Coating Details
To add a touch of modern refinement while staying true to the car’s heritage, we powder-coated the fan and fan housing in silver to perfectly match the car’s exterior color. This subtle enhancement adds a cohesive and polished look to the engine bay, brightening up the centerpiece of this classic air-cooled Porsche.
A True Labor of Love
Working on this car was a privilege. The original air flow meter sticker, untouched bolts, and countless other preserved components were a reminder of how special this 911 is. Mr. Pluma trusted us to care for his car, and we are always thrilled to be a part of maintaining these automotive legends.
